How to download Gmail blocked files or attachments

Most times you wish to download a file sent to you via gmail or any other email platform like yahooo but discovered that you can’t because the file download access has been disabled or blocked due to virus. Well, this post will help you with ways you can easily download such files with ease.

What causes Gmail “unable to download file due to virus”?

Sometimes, Gmail blocks attachments because of certain extensions they consider bad or harmful. There are some file types that are blocked by Gmail, but .rar is not one of them. Here’s the list. It turns out that the archive included a few .bat or .exe files inside a .zip archive and “Gmail won’t accept these file types even if they’re sent in a zipped format”.
It shows error message on Gmail like:
Anti-virus warning – n attachment contains a virus or blocked file. Downloading this attachment is disabled.

1. Original file download method to download blocked Gmail files

While checking some old Gmail messages you may noticed this warning message and you can’t download such file. Now what do you do when you need to download a file(s) or attachments that Gmail has blocked you from downloading for security reasons.

The steps to unblocking and downloading file(s) or attachments that Gmail has blocked

1. From your email (Gmail) account. Open it, click on arrow located at right side of email section and then click ‘show original‘ as seen below

2. This action opens up a new window tab with ‘Original Message‘. Select ‘Download Original‘ and save file as .eml extension.

Note:
If the downloaded file saves as .txt, then:
* Right click on download original
* Save file as file.eml

3. At this point, just open the saved file in Outlook or any other email client, click on file and then ‘Save All Attachments‘, and save your Zip file.

This process allows you to download the file with ease but if you do not find the above process easy, then you can use the second method to download blocked files in Gmail.

2. Use of a software/app to download blocked Gmail file

This method of downloading blocked Gmail files/attachment involves the use of an application called “Mailbird”

Email attachment errors won’t be bothersome anymore if you’re using this lightweight and intuitive email client. The steps is similar to the above method but just has mailbird as an extension to help download and open blocked files/attachment easily

How to open disabled/blocked attachments in Gmail

  1. Open Gmail client in the browser.
  2. Open the mail that was flagged and click on the menu and select Show Original as shown below.
  3. Right-click on the Download Original link and choose Save as… from the menu.
  4. Change the .txt extension to .eml and save it.

  • Open the saved file with any other email client (e.g. Mailbird, as suggested above).
  • Right-click on the attachment and choose Save.
  • Save the archive and extract it in the preferred location.
