Twelve soldiers announced the takeover of Bongo’s administration on national television. According to recent reports, they also detained his son and his allies for “treason” along with him.
In a statement given out on national TV, they stated, “President Ali Bongo is under house arrest, surrounded by his family and doctors.”

The two main leaders of the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), as well as Bongo’s son and close adviser Noureddin Bongo Valentin, chief of staff Ian Ghislain Ngoulou, as well as his deputy, two other presidential advisers, and “have been arrested,” according to a military leader.

“As a result, the general elections of August 26, 2023, and the results that were abridged, are canceled.

The junta decided that all national institutions, including the Federal Government, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, and the Gabonese Elections Centre, should be abolished.

They thus appealed for calm and composure from the general public, the sister country communities present in Gabon, and the Gabonese diaspora.
