The much-anticipated iPhone 16 is set to be unveiled in September, but there’s a catch—it won’t initially include the highly anticipated Apple Intelligence.

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, the iPhone 16 is expected to debut in September. However, these new models will be missing a major feature that Apple has been heavily promoting: Apple Intelligence. This advanced AI technology will only be available a few weeks after the launch, arriving through a software update.

iPhone 16 to Launch Soon, Missing Key AI Features at First

For early buyers, this means the first batch of iPhone 16 units will not have these new AI capabilities out of the box. Instead, users will have to wait for the software update to experience the full potential of Apple Intelligence. This new technology promises a range of features, including smarter notification prioritization, summaries of web pages and voice notes, improved writing tools, a reimagined Siri, and integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Gurman, who has tested some of these features on the iOS 18.1 beta, noted that while promising, they still need refinement. For example, the Messages app will offer suggested replies, which are slightly more advanced than previous iterations. The Mail app will have similar suggestions, though they will be more detailed.

One of the standout features is the Reduce Interruptions Focus mode. This feature works similarly to Do Not Disturb but is more intelligent, allowing only important notifications, such as urgent messages and emails, to pass through. Additionally, when Reader Mode is activated in the Safari browser, it provides concise summaries of web pages and articles, condensing them into a single paragraph.

Apple Intelligence will also include new Writing Tools designed to enhance the tone of your text, making it more professional or friendly, and providing assistance with proofreading. Another convenient feature is the ability to record and transcribe phone calls automatically, delivering a full transcription after the call ends.

Despite these innovative features, Gurman remains cautious. He believes that while they are impressive, they may not be compelling enough to persuade someone to upgrade from an iPhone 14 Pro to an iPhone 16. However, he acknowledges that the excitement generated by Apple’s marketing campaigns is likely to drive significant interest in the new model.

Apple’s foray into AI with these new features is clearly aimed at competing with similar offerings from Google Gemini, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and Microsoft’s Copilot. However, for Apple to establish itself as a leader in the AI space, it will need to continue pushing the envelope.

It’s expected that all iPhone 16 models, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, will eventually receive Apple Intelligence through a software update. So, while the iPhone 16 may launch without this much-anticipated feature, users can look forward to its arrival in the near future, approximately a month after the initial release.
