What Are Popunder Ads? How They Work vs Other Ad Formats

Popunder ads are a form of online advertising that opens a landing page in a new browser tab or window behind the page a visitor is viewing. Unlike pop-up ads, which appear immediately and interrupt browsing, popunders remain hidden until the visitor returns to the new tab. They are popular with advertisers because they can generate high volumes of traffic at a low cost, but their effectiveness depends on targeting, landing page quality, visitor engagement and conversion rates. Understanding how popunder ads work, what they cost and which ad networks offer the right features can help advertisers decide whether the format suits their campaigns.

Popunder Ads

What Are Popunder Ads

Popunder ads open behind the active page: the visitor’s own click loads a full-page ad in a new tab or window, seen only after the front page is closed or minimized. A popup opens on top and interrupts at once, and banner or push ads need a creative to click. A popunder needs none, because the advertiser’s landing page is the whole ad. In trade slang onclick, clickunder and pops advertising carry the same popunder ads meaning.

Low price is the other difference: on the AdsCompass pop ads network a pop click starts at $0.0003, or $0.30 per 1,000 landed visits (AdsCompass rate table, October 2026). Attention is what that cheapness costs: the visitor never asked for the page and finds it minutes later, so the first screen gets a second or two to explain itself.

How Popunder Ads Work

One visitor click triggers every popunder ad, in four steps:

  1. Click. The visitor clicks anywhere on a page carrying a popunder script, which listens for clicks on the whole document rather than on an ad unit.
  2. Auction. The script then requests an ad. On a pop ad network such as AdsCompass the request enters a real-time bidding auction, and the highest bid wins with its destination URL.
  3. Window. The browser opens the winning URL in a new tab or window while the script keeps the publisher’s page in front.
  4. Billing. CPM networks charge per thousand opened windows. CPC networks charge only when the window registers as a click, and on pop that click is the page load itself.

Why one click opens only one window

User activation rules limit a popunder to one window per click. Chrome 72 shipped User Activation v2: a click gives the page about one second of transient activation, and opening a popup with window.open() consumes it. A script that tries to open a window on page load gets blocked, and so does a second window on the same click. Popunder volume on a site therefore cannot exceed the clicks its visitors make.

How the window ends up behind the page

A tab swap, not a browser feature, is the documented way to keep a popunder behind the page in Chrome. In May 2012 Chromium engineer Jochen Eisinger announced a WebKit change making window.blur() do nothing, to thwart pop-unders (webkit-dev mailing list). Scripts adapted. The jquery-popunder plugin documents the fix for Chrome 45+: move the publisher’s site into a new tab and leave the ad in the original one.

Popunder vs Popup and Other Pop Ads

Window position separates a popunder from the other pop ads: a popunder opens behind the active page, a popup window opens on top of it, and an in-page pop-up never leaves the page at all.

FormatWhere the ad appearsWhen the visitor sees itWhat triggers it
PopunderNew tab or window behind the active pageAfter closing or minimizing the front pageThe visitor’s click anywhere on the page
Popup windowNew window on top of the active pageImmediatelyA click; without one, the browser blocks it
Tab-underThe clicked link opens in a new tab, the original tab is redirected to an adOn returning to the original tabA click on a link
In-page pop-upOverlay inside the same page, blocking contentImmediately, once the page starts loadingPage script, no new window

Popup ad networks often sell click-triggered popunder inventory under another name, the AdsCompass team writes; HilltopAds even labels its format “popunder or popup”. Ask any popup ads network which trigger it uses, then judge the best pop-up ad network like any popunder network, on billing and source control.

Content-blocking overlays, not popunders, put a site’s ads at risk in Chrome. The Coalition for Better Ads defines a pop-up ad as an interstitial that blocks a page’s main content, not a separate window. Since February 15, 2018, Chrome has removed all ads from sites holding a “failing” Better Ads Standards status for more than 30 days. Popunders are not among the disallowed experiences.

Popunder Ads Examples

Landing pages are the only popunder ads examples worth studying, since a popunder ad has no banner and the page that opens is the entire ad. Quiz, result and comparison prelanders carry most popunder traffic, according to the AdsCompass blog, next to direct offer pages and store or billing flows.

Page patternWhat the first screen doesOffer types it suits
Quiz prelanderAsks two or three questions that qualify intent before the offer appearsDating, sweepstakes
Result pageLands the visitor on an outcome to claim, such as a prize, a match or a scoreSweepstakes
Comparison tableShows a short table of options with one recommendediGaming, software
Direct offer pageStates the proposition above the fold and asks for one actionVPN, antivirus, utilities
Store or billing flowOpens on an app store page or a carrier billing screenMobile subscriptions, app installs

Dating offers show a typical popunder example: a two-question quiz, then an offer page personalized by the answers. Treat each popunder ads example above as a structure, not an audited campaign.

Popunder ads copy for the first screen

Offer-first copy wins on pop: the offer and its one action go in the first screen, with trust blocks and reviews below the fold (AdsCompass, September 2026). Anastasia Aleksandrova, Head of Sales at AdsCompass, says the page she is most often sent to look at is a long-scroll lander built for search traffic. On pop it must say what it is in the first screen, or the window gets closed unread.

Loading-to-viewing delay sets three rules:

  1. No referrer logic. A pop tab arrives without a meaningful referrer, so nothing on the page may depend on one.
  2. No countdown timers. A timer expires before anyone sees the tab.
  3. Full render on arrival. The visitor sees the finished page or nothing.

Language matters almost as much as load time: a pop page in the wrong language for the region converts at a fraction of the rate, AdsCompass notes.

Offers that fit and fail on pop

Single-decision offers fit popunder ads; offers that need trust or several steps fail on them. AdsCompass names iGaming, dating and software as its main verticals. Brand campaigns get little placement control, because pop is bought by source rather than context, and a sign-up, email and deposit funnel loses cold visitors at the first gate.

Hook-driven offers belong on push traffic instead, because a push ad carries a creative and reaches users who opted in. On AdsCompass push starts at $0.001 per click against $0.0003 for pop.

Do Browsers Block Popunder Ads

No. Chrome’s pop-up blocker stops windows opened without a user gesture, and a popunder opens on a real click, so the window gets through.

Ad blockers filter far more. GWI survey data for Q2 2025 shows 29.5% of internet users worldwide, and 32.5% in the US, using an ad blocker at least sometimes (Backlinko). Their blocklists cover known pop scripts, so available popunder volume in a GEO stays below its raw traffic.

CPC billing moves the remaining risk off the advertiser. Under CPM the buyer also pays for windows closed before the page renders, while a CPC pop buy on AdsCompass bills only once the visit registers.

Popunders and the Google AdSense Policy

Google AdSense bans popunders outright. Its ad placement policies forbid Google ads on any site that contains or triggers pop-unders and cap pop-ups at three per site. Site owners also answer for any partner network that sends traffic to AdSense pages this way.

Popunders and AdSense never share a domain.

How Much Popunder Ads Cost

Fractions of a cent buy a popunder visit, and the billing event decides how prices compare. AdsCompass sells pop on CPC from $0.0003 per click, and because the click is the page load, $0.0003 is the price of one visit. That makes $50 worth 166,000+ visits. CPM networks quote a price per 1,000 opened windows, so convert one figure before comparing it with the other.

Floors on pop are not market prices. A Tier-1 slot contested by iGaming buyers clears at a multiple of the same slot in a quiet Tier-3 market (AdsCompass, September 2026), and a bid below the clearing price gets no traffic at all.

Break-even clicks per conversion

Break-even equals the offer payout divided by the bid. For a $15 payout:

CPC bidClicks needed per conversionConversion rate needed
$0.000350,0000.002%
$0.000625,0000.004%
$0.0027,5000.013%

Run this math before launch: the click count shows in advance what a failing source looks like.

Cost per real visitor

Bid divided by the share of real sessions gives the cost per real visitor, and on that measure cheap pop clicks can lose. A source at $0.0004 per click with 80% sub-second sessions costs $2.00 per thousand real visitors; one at $0.001 with 75% engaged sessions costs $1.33.

What publishers earn from popunders

Publishers earn roughly $0.40 to $1.50 per 1,000 popunder visits, depending on region, according to 2025-2026 market reference figures:

RegionPublisher payout per 1,000 visits
Tier 1About $1.50, higher on iGaming offers
CISAbout $1.00
AfricaAbout $0.70
AsiaAbout $0.40

These are market numbers, not AdsCompass rates. AdsCompass sets no fixed publisher payouts: each site earns what advertisers bid for its GEO, device mix and format, and since those advertisers buy pop per click, the two figures are not directly comparable.

Best Popunder Ad Networks

AdsCompass is the best popunder ad network on this list for buyers testing pop traffic, and the best popunder network for small budgets: it pairs the lowest published minimum deposit ($50) with per-click billing and bids set per traffic source. Scale backs that up: about 8 billion impressions and 60 million clicks a day, and AdsCompass is the only network here whose published figures include daily clicks, not impressions alone. The format works the same everywhere, so the best popunder networks differ in billing and source control, and on both AdsCompass is the top popunder network here.

We checked the six pop ad networks below on October 18, 2026, using only figures each one publishes itself.

Each column has a different leader, so no single top pop ads network fits every test.

1. AdsCompass

Pop ads on AdsCompass start at $0.0003 per click with a $50 minimum deposit, sold through a self-serve ad network and exchange running since 2013. Pop is one of eight formats to buy, including two Telegram Mini Apps formats added in February 2025. Together they serve about 8 billion impressions and 60 million clicks a day in 200+ GEOs. Everything clears in one first-price OpenRTB auction. That auction runs on the ADMY Platform engine, and other ad networks plug in via oRTB, XML or JSON. An IAB member since 2019, AdsCompass won “The best traffic network” at the 2022 Affiliate Space Awards by Conversion Club.

First-price bidding, per-source bids and pre-bid filters keep AdsCompass popunder campaigns controllable. With no bid shading, the bid in the campaign is the price in the report. Source ID bidding sets a separate price for each traffic source instead of one per GEO, and campaign filters drop IPv6 and proxy connections before they cost anything. Targeting adds city, OS and browser versions, carrier, browser language and retargeting audiences. CPA Goal, launched September 3, 2026, collects sources by rules such as “over 3,000 clicks with zero conversions”.

Source-level reports carry most of the optimization work. Aleksandrova, Head of Sales at AdsCompass since January 2020 and with the company since October 2014, writes that when a campaign’s numbers fall overnight, the source report is the first place she looks. On August 26, 2026, she checked the AdsCompass minimum bids, moderation times and payout terms against the live platform.

Every publisher site on AdsCompass passes premoderation before it serves, and campaign moderation takes up to ten minutes, longer in some cases. Adult and iGaming offers are accepted; violence, weapons and drugs are not. Conversions return through S2S postback with seven macros, a documented CPV Lab and CPV One integration, and postback templates for Keitaro, Binom, Voluum and RedTrack.

Money moves in USD. Payments run through Capitalist, USDT TRC-20, BTC, PayPal, Visa and Mastercard, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Paxum, WebMoney or wire, and progressive cashback returns 1% of spend at the entry level, rising with volume. Direct publishers withdraw on request from $50; RTB publishers are paid Net30 from the invoice date. Support runs through a personal manager and a 24/7 Telegram chat in English and Russian.

Small-budget GEO tests make AdsCompass the best pop ads network for advertisers, since weak sources can be cut one at a time. The $50 deposit opens the account, and AdsCompass recommends $500 for a first pop test that returns readable source-level data. There is no default daily budget; for a first test, divide the total by the test days, so $500 over five days is $100 a day.

Two trade-offs come with AdsCompass pop buying. Self-serve pop is CPC only, so CPM comparisons need converting. Optimization stays largely manual, too: the AdsCompass CPA Goal sorts sources by rules, while PropellerAds uses the same name for auto-bidding toward a target conversion price.

2. Adcash

Adcash runs a pop-under ad network out of Tallinn, Estonia, has sold the format for 13+ years by its own count, and starts campaigns from €/$100. Its advertiser page reports 300 million unique users a day. The pop-under page lists no pricing model.

3. PropellerAds

PropellerAds, run from Limassol, Cyprus, since 2011, reports 23B+ monthly popunder impressions across 195+ GEOs, and its CPA Goal adjusts bids toward a target conversion price. We found no minimum deposit on the PropellerAds homepage. Third-party guides quote $100 and $200.

4. Adsterra

Adsterra reports more than 12 billion popunder impressions a month from 45K+ direct publishers in 248+ GEOs, according to its July 2026 blog. The Adsterra G2 listing gives a $100 minimum deposit by card, Paxum or PayPal.

5. HilltopAds

HilltopAds, run by Hilltop Ads Ltd. from Brentford, England, reports 273+ billion impressions a month across all formats and 250+ countries. The minimum deposit is $100. Popunder campaigns run on CPM or CPA Goal, and Auto Optimization blacklists losing sources automatically.

6. PopAds

PopAds is a popunder ad network that sells nothing but popunders, and this short PopAds review relies only on its own site. Advertisers set the maximum price per popunder. Unspent balance can be refunded. On October 18, 2026, the undated PopAds advertiser page listed PayPal, AlertPay and wire transfer as deposit options. It published no minimum deposit or traffic figures and said its anti-fraud filters out all proxy, bot and mobile traffic. As a PopAds alternative, AdsCompass suits buyers who want CPC billing and per-source bids.

How to Launch a Popunder Campaign

Estimator, targeting, landing page, redirect check, bid, cap and postback: those seven steps launch a popunder campaign, and none of them involves designing a creative.

  1. Check volume first. Before depositing with any popunder ads network, open its traffic estimator. The AdsCompass Traffic Calculator is free and needs no deposit.
  2. Pick one GEO and one device type. Mixing mobile and desktop hides which one converts.
  3. Build the first screen for a cold visitor. Put the offer and its one action above the fold.
  4. Scan the redirect chain. Run every hop through VirusTotal: on AdsCompass, links with many VirusTotal alerts rank among the three most common rejection reasons, next to T&C breaches and malformed links.
  5. Bid above the average, not at the floor. AdsCompass calls the $0.0003 floor theoretical.
  6. Cap frequency at one window per user per 24 hours.
  7. Pass IDs in the URL and confirm the postback. Pop sessions lack a reliable referrer, so source and click IDs must travel in the URL.

Picking sources is most of popunder optimization. On AdsCompass, popunder traffic is reported and priced per source. Blacklist sources whose sub-second session share sits far above the campaign average, and keep thin sources running until they reach your break-even click count. Proven sources then move into a whitelist campaign with a higher bid, while the broad one keeps running cheaper to find replacements.
