Lagos Businessman Idowu Jailed for Fraud Involving $62,500 and €36,020
In a major win for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has sentenced businessman Olumuyiwa Idowu and his company, Tennyvans Nigeria Limited, to a total of 30 years in prison.
The judgment was delivered by Justice Ismail Ijelu on Monday, March 30, 2026, bringing an end to a long-running case involving the misuse of funds meant for industrial equipment purchases.
How the Fraud Happened
The court found that Idowu defrauded a Dutch businessman, Rene Theodorous Johannes Brouwers, owner of Brouwers USA Trucks and Parts, in transactions that date back to 2012.

- He collected $62,500 to purchase Caterpillar parts but diverted the money for personal use.
- He also received €36,020 to buy and ship a DAF truck, a box trailer, and two tippers, which were never delivered.
Trial and Conviction
Idowu was arraigned on November 27, 2024, on a six-count charge related to stealing and failure to declare assets. Although he pleaded not guilty, the prosecution, led by Ebuka Okongwu, presented strong evidence.
- The EFCC called three witnesses and submitted 11 exhibits tracing how the funds were diverted.
- He was also found guilty of failing to declare his assets, which violates provisions of the EFCC Act.
- The court ruled that his actions amounted to stealing under Lagos State law.
The Sentence
Justice Ijelu ruled that the case was proven beyond reasonable doubt and handed down the sentence as follows:
- Five years each for counts one to four, which will run at the same time.
- Five years each for counts five and six related to asset declaration.
- Although the total adds up to 30 years, some of the sentences will run concurrently.
The court also allowed an option of a ₦1 million fine for each of the last two counts, provided payment is made within six months.
Refund and Custody
Beyond the prison term, the court ordered Idowu to fully repay the stolen $62,500 and €36,020 within six months.
Following the ruling, he was taken into custody at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre to begin serving his sentence.
A Strong Message to Businesses
This case sends a clear warning to businesses, especially those involved in logistics and heavy equipment transactions. It highlights the increasing determination of Nigerian authorities to tackle financial crimes and protect international business relationships as the country works to attract more foreign investment.
