Deactivation is ideal if you want a break without losing everything.

Deletion is for when you’re sure you want to remove your account forever.

How to Temporarily Deactivate (Disable) Your Instagram Account

Note: You cannot deactivate your account from the mobile app — you must use a browser (on mobile or desktop).

Steps:

  1. Open a web browser and go to instagram.com. Log in if required.
  2. Click your profile picture (top right) and go to Profile → Edit Profile.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom and click “Temporarily disable my account”.
  4. From the dropdown, choose a reason you’re disabling the account.
  5. Re-enter your password to confirm.
  6. Click Temporarily Disable Account.

Once deactivated:

  • Your posts, profile, comments, and likes are hidden from others.
  • You can reactivate at any time by logging back in.

How to Permanently Delete Your Instagram Account

Important: Deletion cannot be done from within the Instagram mobile app. Use a browser.

Before You Delete: Back Up Your Data

You might want to save your photos, videos, DMs, and profile data before deletion. Otherwise, you’ll lose access forever. Instagram offers a data download tool.

  • Go to Settings > Security > Download your information (or equivalent path depending on your app version).
  • Enter your email, choose format (HTML or JSON), and request the download.
  • Instagram may take up to 48 hours or more (for larger accounts) to prepare the data.

How to Delete Your Account

  1. Using browser (mobile or desktop), go to Instagram’s Delete Your Account page.
    • If not logged in, Instagram will prompt you to log in.
  2. From the dropdown, select a reason you’re deleting your account.
  3. Re-enter your password when prompted.
  4. Click Delete [username] / Permanently delete account.

Instagram gives you 30 days to cancel the deletion if you change your mind. After that, your account and all its data will be permanently removed.

Even after deletion, Instagram may retain some information (in backup storage) for a limited time for legal, safety, or technical reasons but it won’t be accessible to you.

Things to Consider Before Deleting or Deactivating

  • Messages & interactions: Even after deactivation or deletion, direct messages you sent to others may still be visible to the recipient.
  • Username reuse: Once permanently deleted, you can’t reuse the same username for a new account. Instagram Help Center
  • Link to other Meta accounts: Deleting your Instagram may also affect other linked Meta accounts (e.g. Threads) if they share the same profile.
  • Mental break vs final exit: If you’re unsure, deactivation gives you flexibility without losing your entire history.
  • Why people delete: Reasons range from privacy concerns, digital detox, reducing distractions, or wanting to rebrand entirely.
